Beleaguered Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday chaired a meeting of federal ministers to discuss course of investigations pertaining to Panama leaks.
Mr Sharif also vowed to have the name of his three children cleared in the “Panama Papers” issue and is weighing all options to deal with the accusations of money laundering and tax evasion, according to a media report.
Officials said the high-level meeting convened in the federal capital discussed possibility of Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali led commission’s establishment to probe the leaks of Panama-based law firm that tangled Sharif family.
“The meeting also reviewed current political situation in the country,” said an official. Addressing the participants, Prime Minister said the government took steps to better performance of different institutions. He asserted that Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)-led government’s policies would steer the country towards prosperity and restoration of peace. “Pakistan is facing a number of challenges at the time,” he added. PM Sharif said the government was following an efficient policy to counter energy crisis while policies regarding economic growth have also been fruitful.
“The country’s political leadership has adopted zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and extremist outfits,” he added. The Prime Minister said Operation Zarb-e-Azb crippled terrorists’ network and hold in tribal areas.
Earlier this month, Panama Papers had published leaked documents from a law firm revealing offshore companies and tax havens used by at least 140 world leaders including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family.
PTI leader Imran Khan is adamant on formation of a CJP-led commission to probe the leaks and alleged corruption against Prime Minister’s family.
He has warned of staging a sit-in in front of Mr Sharif’s Lahore’s Jati Umra residence if the government did not hold a impartial probe. Meanwhile, in a meeting with Italian foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni on Thursday, Prime Minister Sharif said that despite numerous challenges, the consolidated efforts of his government have tremendously improved the state of affairs in all major sectors of the country.
“Pakistan is marching on its way to achieve long term economic stability,” said the Prime Minister.
He added, “We are pursuing a robust national policy to overcome the energy issues confronting our people and the country, which has already yielded very positive results. The positive economic indicators reflect our efforts for revival of our economy.”
Offering all possible support, Mr Gentiloni appreciated the Prime Minister for leading a war against the extremist ideology in Pakistan.
