Pakistan’s ex-chief justice floats party
Pakistan’s former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has launched a new political party, the Pakistan Justice Democratic Critic Party, aiming to resolve common man’s problems.
Pakistan’s former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has launched a new political party, the Pakistan Justice Democratic Critic Party, aiming to resolve common man’s problems.
Addressing the launch ceremony of the party, Mr Chaudhry said he would welcome only those people in his party who are not corrupt.
“The PJDCP would welcome only non-corrupt people and the party’s aim is to solve people’s problems,” the CJP was quoted as saying by the Express Tribune.
It is the first time in the country’s history that a former Chief Justice is setting up his own political party, the Nation daily said.
Mr Chaudhry, whose three non-consecutive terms (2005-13) were marked by judicial activism and landmark judgments, had a roller-coaster ride in the office, putting him at loggerheads with the then military dictator Pervez Musharraf.
Mr Musharraf sacked him in 2007.
Later, the new government under the Pakistan People’s Party reinstated Mr Chaudhry after prolonged nationwide protests in 2009.
Mr Chaudhry’s son Arsalan Iftikhar also faced corruption allegations.
Mr Chaudhry said former military ruler Pervez Musharraf hurled unfounded allegations against him, and he was ashamed of ratifying Mr Musharraf’s martial law in the country.
The former Chief Justice said that his party would work on a 25-point-agenda, including health, education and land reforms.
Provision of justice to the common man would be the basic manifesto of his party, he added. The ceremony was attended by lawyers, civil society members and others.
