The ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has secured more seats than its rivals in the first-ever local government elections in Islamabad Capital Territory while Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) was the runners up. The PML-N scored 22 seats, the PTI got 16 while the Independents won 11 seats out of the total of 50.
Voting for the local bodies elections in Islamabad was held on Monday. A total of 680,612 registered voters exercised their right. At least 2,396 candidates are contesting for 550 seats in the federal capital of the country.
Islamabad, the country’s capital since 1967, has been the hub of political activities but for long the most powerful city hosted only one National Assembly seat which was increased to two in 2002 during Pervez Musharraf’s rule.
The elected representatives will now have to wait for the new rules expected within two years and will work under the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Municipal by-laws until then. Strict security arrangements were made to ensure fair and transparent polling. The government deployed 625 Army troops.
