Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday held a one-on-one meeting with Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif to discuss the recent meetingwith his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Paris, officials said.

An official said, “During the meeting, the Premier and Chief of the Army Staff discussed and resolved the unnecessary rifts which have erupted between civil and military leadership following controversial statements issued from both the sides last month.”

Earlier last month, General Raheel Sharif used a corps commanders’ meeting to call for taking “governance initiatives” in order to complement efforts of the security forces in the fight against terrorism.

Civil and military authorities appeared to be at odds over the slow pace of implementation on a new national plan introduced to effectively deal with the threat of terrorism and extremism.

However, another official said, “Military leadership has reservations over PM Sharif’s stance on the ongoing Karachi operation as he fully stands with Pakistan People’s Party co-chief Asif Ali Zardari and the

Sindh government, rather than giving a political go-ahead to law enforcement agencies to address Karachi’s law and order situation.”

Mr Sharif and General Sharif also exchanged views on the Heart of Asia Conference on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sharif and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, will jointly inaugurate the minis

erial meet, to be attended by representatives and high-ranking delegates, including foreign ministers from 14 participating states, 17 supporting countries and 12 international and regional organisations. The Heart of Asia: Istanbul Process was an initiative of Afghanistan and Turkey in 2011.

The main objective of the process was to foster efforts for regional cooperation and connectivity with a view to promoting long-term peace and stability as well as progress and development in Afghanistan, and the region.

The fifth ministerial conference is expected to adopt a forward-looking Islamabad Declaration titled —‘Enhanced Cooperation for Countering Security Threats and Promoting Connectivity in the Heart of Asia Region.
