Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday appreciated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi’s “statesmanship” saying his goodwill gesture will go a long way in bringing the two nations closer.

“The most difficult issues of the world can be resolved with statesmanship. Narendra Modi’s (recent) visit will help the peace process,” he said.

Talking to reporters here, PM Nawaz Sharif said he hopes the spirit of goodwill gestures will continue in both India and Pakistan.

He said it was with the resolution of conflicts that the people of both countries can prosper.Quoting US President Barrack Obama as an example, the PM said it was with wisdom and statesmanship that President Obama resolved the nuclear conflict with Iran.

Separately, Pakistan’s top diplomat Sartaj Aziz said Islamabad and New Delhi will aim to reduce tension in the first phase when they resume the comprehensive dialogue.

Mr Aziz, adviser to the PM on foreign affairs, said the comprehensive dialogue between Pakistan and India will focus all issues, including Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview with the state-run radio, he said, “Initial focus would be on reduction of tension and maintenance of calm on the LoC to provide relief to the people living nearby. Then we move forward to resolving issues,” he said.

Mr Aziz said Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi — in their recent meeting in Lahore — decided that foreign secretaries would meet in the midst of January to decide details of dialogue on all issues.

He said good neighbourly relations will enable the two countries to benefit from projects aimed at regional connectivity.

Commenting on the situation, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) Senator Abdul Qayum said India had revised its policy towards Pakistan which would help peace efforts.
