Ms Clinton is tied up with Mr Carson at 47 per cent each, while she leads Donald Trump by 8 points, Jeb Bush by 4 points and Marco Rubio by 3 points, NBC News/The Wall Street Journal poll said.
In the national average of Republican presidential ca-ndidates, Mr Trump still maintains a marginal lead of 1.3 per cent over Mr Carson, who has emerged as the frontrunner in the last two polls.
According to a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University, the conservative Mr Carson, the only African-American in the 2016 White House race, is virtually tied at the top with Mr Trump, trailing him by one percentage point. But their trend lines are dramatically different.
The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has Mr Carson surging into a six-point lead, quite a showing for a candidate who has largely shun-ned traditional campaign strategies and refused to play rough and tumble campaign politics with his rivals.
That follows a New York Times /CBS News poll from last week that showed Mr Carson edging ahead of Mr Trump nationally.
To date he is the only Republican who has shown an ability to muster enough support to knock Mr Trump off is perch.
