Gaddafi was said to have been executed by his own golden gun, which was held up in celebration by rebels as symbol of victory.

Never before seen footage of Libyan revolutionary and politician, Colonel Gaddafi, has emerged following a BBC news report. The video shows battered and bleeding Gaddafi, right after being captured by Libyan rebels and moments before his execution.

Gaddafi governed Libya as its primary leader from 1969 to 2011. He was considered a tyrant by many. Col Muammar Gaddafi had often referred to his enemies as “vermin” as he vowed to hunt them down alley by alley or die trying.

Gaddafi’s last moments were not very different from what he envisioned for his enemies. The shaky video, captured on a mobile phone, show him bloodied and unkempt, surrounded by jubilant rebels holding weapons to his head. His trademark mop of frizzy black hair was matted and thin and his robes were stained red from a wound to his head or neck.

More than anything the footage showed him weak and confused.

The footage was captured on the mobile phone of one of the fighters, who dragged the dictator alive from a drain in Sirte in 2011. The once dictator is seen pleading for life in the video.

The video was taken by rebel fighter Ayman Almani, who was tracked down by a BBC reporter in the Libyan city of Misrata more than four years later.

According to reports, Almani said, “He deserved it. Islam teaches us not to mistreat a prisoner, not to bear a grudge. But the people got carried away in the stampede and no-one could stop them.”

Gaddafi was said to have been executed by his own personal golden gun which was held up in celebration by jubilant rebels and became a symbol of their victory.
