Former Afghan governor freed in Pakistan

Former governor of Afghanistan’s Herat province Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi — who was kidnapped from a market in Islamabad in February — has been freed, officials said on Friday.

Former governor of Afghanistan’s Herat province Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi — who was kidnapped from a market in Islamabad in February — has been freed, officials said on Friday.

The Afghan consulate in Peshawar confirmed the former governor was freed by law enforcement personnel after an exchange of fire with suspected kidnappers in the Rasheed Garhi area of Swabi.

Mr Wahidi was going to a restaurant in a market in sector F-7 with his grandson on February 12 when he was abducted by unidentified men.

He was in Islamabad with his family members to get UK visas. Afghans travel to Pakistan for UK visas as they are not issued visas by the British embassy in Kabul.

“I can confirm that Fazlullah Wahidi was freed early on Friday as I have talked to him. He has been handed over to the Afghan diplomats in the Pakistani city of Peshawar,” his son-in-law, Sayed Ikram, said in Pakistan. Mr Ikram is in Islamabad as part of an Afghan parliamentary delegation.

Mr Wahidi met the Afghan ambassador to Islamabad, Omar Zakhilwal, on Friday. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
