First-ever woman speaker takes oath in Balochistan

Pakistan’s conservative Balochistan province had its first woman Speaker of the provincial assembly on Thur-sday as Pakistan Musl-im League (Nawaz)’s Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani took the oath.

PML-N’s Sardar Sanaullah Zehri was also unanimously elected as the new chief minister. Ms Durrani was elected as Speaker of Balochistan Assembly without any contest. Raheela Durrani is the 14th Speaker of Balo-chistan Assembly and the first ever woman Speaker of the house.

She is a practising Lawyer and social worker by profession. She is an active member of Public Safety Com-mission Balochistan, Nati-onal Commission on Status of Women, and Balochistan Olympic Association. Speaker Balochistan Assembly post was vacant for the last eight months.

Presiding officer Liaqat Agha administered the oath following which Speaker Durrani chaired a session. While addressing the participants, she said that Speaker’s post is a big challenge for her. She prioritised shouldering her responsibilities without any bias and above political interests.
