Donald Trump may have his eyes on running against Hillary Clinton in the general election, but in the meantime he’s stepping up attacks on America’s most-watched female news anchor.
Having threatened riots should the Republican party deny him the nomination in the race for the White House, Mr Trump took time out of his schedule on Thursday to fire off three tweets calling out “crazy” Megyn Kelly.
First he complained that she hosted his closest Republican rival, Ted Cruz, whom he has nicknamed “lyin’ Ted” on her prime-time Fox News show The Kelly File, the second-most watched programme in American cable news after that of fellow Fox anchor Bill O’Reilly. In the morning, he complained about an interview in which Ms Kelly said Mr O’Reilly could have done more to defend her against Mr Trump. “Her bad show is a total hit piece on me. Tough!” he said.
“Highly overrated & crazy @megynkelly is always complaining about Mr Trump and yet she devotes her shows to me. Focus on others Megyn!” he went on to write at lunchtime. Mr Trump regularly posts messages from others who denigrate Ms Kelly. The avalanche of criticism prompted one of Kelly’s colleagues to hit back. “This obsession with @megynkelly is disturbing and not presidential. Please stop. @realDonaldTrump,” tweeted Janice Dean, senior meteorologist at Fox News. Meanhile, The police and the FBI are investigating a threatening letter sent to the Manhattan apartment of Donald Trump’s son Eric that contained a white powder, two law enforcement officials said on Friday. Preliminary tests on the substance in the envelope sent to Eric Trump’s apartment on Thursday indicated it was not hazardous. The handwritten letter was postmarked March 5 from Boston and referenced Donald Trump’s presidential bid.
The letter said: “If your father does not drop out of the race, the next envelope won’t be a fake.” It was signed “X,” according to one of the law enforcement officials, who had seen the letter. In a statement, the New York police department confirmed that it had responded to a Trump building overlooking Central Park to investigate a suspicious letter received by a tenant but didn’t name the recipient.
Several Jewish religious leaders have said they would boycott Donald Trump when he addresses a major pro-Israeli conference here on Monday, as they accused the Republi-can presidential frontrunner of “sowing seeds of hatred”.
Also, Democrat strategists and supporters of presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton have decided to launch an “orchestrated” campaign against Mr Trump, even as the controversial billionaire is facing a revolt from his own party leadership.
