A policeman deployed as part of security for Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain’s Karachi residence was shot dead on Tuesday.

The police said unknown gunmen fired shots at Zahid Shah at Karimabad bridge on Tuesday morning when he was returning home. Shah died on the spot. The 32-year-old was part of the Special Security Unit. His body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr Hussain on Tuesday urged countries in the region to set aside their differences and work in unison for a better and prosperous South Asia. He was addressing the opening ceremony of the SAARC mother-child care conference in Islamabad.

The President said, “Our contiguity and similar socio-economic conditions demand a collective effort to address the important social issues of maternal and child healthcare.”

He said the government was giving top priority to the health of mothers and their children, and striving to deliver basic health care facilities.
