Senator Bernie Sanders has mounted a come-from-behind victory in Indiana’s Democratic primary, denying the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton a feather in her cap as she seeks their party’s presidential nomination.
Mr Sanders, a self-declared democratic socialist, was ahead of Ms Clinton by 52.5 per cent to 47.5 per cent, providing a shot in the arm to the Sanders campaign and further justification for staying in a race that team Clinton and many pundits have said is all but finished.
“The Clinton campaign thinks this campaign is over. They’re wrong,” Mr Sanders said in a statement.
“We are in this campaign to win and we’re going to fight until the last vote is cast,” he added.
“There is nothing I would like more than to take on and defeat Donald Trump, someone who must never become President of this country.”
But the delegate count tells the tale: Ms Clinton is at 2,217 delegates — just 166 shy of the 2,383 needed to secure the nomination, according to a CNN tally. Mr Sanders is at 1,443.
The Clinton campaign is already training its guns on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
John Podesta, chairperson of the Clinton campaign, said on Tuesday: “Throughout this campaign, Donald Trump has demonstrated that he is too divisive and lacks the temperament to lead our nation and the free world. With so much at stake, Donald Trump is simply too big of a risk.” he said.
Ms Clinton has proven that she has the strength to keep us safe in an uncertain world, he added.
