A youth waged a heroic battle against nature’s fury to rescue 20 people, including an elderly woman, from a flooded nullah here, but failed to save himself.

21-year-old Deepak Sahu was swept away by the swirling waters of the flooded nullah after he barely rescued a 55-year-old woman to safety, one of the 20 people trapped in a marooned slum here, even as his fiancée looked on.

The capital city witnes-sed the heartrending incident early on Sunday mor-ning. “He lost his balance while pulling the elderly woman, Kamala Bai, out of water and was washed away in the nullah. All the 20 people rescued by him remained mute spectators to the tragic incident,” Deepak’s brother Pradip, who was also saved by him, told this newspaper.

Deepak reached home late on Saturday after completing shopping for his negotiation, slated to be performed on Sunday afternoon.

“He rushed to the nearby Rajiv Nagar slum when his friends informed him that at least 20 people were trapped in the marooned colony while the nullah, passing through the slum, was swelling dangerously.

He then rescued one after the other victims, including his brother Pradip and the latter’s friend, Nitin. He was pulling the elderly woman, the last person to be saved, out of water when he slipped and was swept away in the flooded nullah. His body was found stuck in a tree in the nullah three hours later,” Pradip said.
