A tribal woman in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar district of Sukma spent seven years in jail being mistaken as her namesake, an alleged Naxal.
Kawasi Hidma (28), a resident of Borguda village in the district, was released from jail recently after a group of lawyers took up her case with the local court.
“I was arrested after being branded as a Naxal in 2008 and then sent to jail. I had absolutely no connection with Maoists. The police mistook me as another woman in my village, my namesake, and arrested me,” Kawasi, who was produced before the media here on Tuesday by the Aam Admi Party, said.
Kawasi, an orphan, had to languish in jails in Dantewada and Jagdalpur in Bastar division for seven long years owing to her inability to support her legal expenses in the court.
She was spotted by the AAP early in 2015. Later, a group of lawyers took her case to the court leading to her release from jail.
