The NDA government has appointed senior IPS officer Archana Ramasundram as director-general of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a paramilitary force which guards the country’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan. This is the first time that a woman will head a Central paramilitary unit.

On Monday, three Central paramilitary forces — BSF, SSB and CRPF — got new chiefs. Anti-Naxal ops specialist K. Durga Prasad was named CRPF director-general while K.K. Sharma will head the BSF. M.K. Singla, a 1982-batch Kerala cadre IPS officer, will be special secretary (internal security) in the MHA. Ms Ramasundram, 58, is now special director of the National Crime Records Bureau.
