A day after an 8-year-old tribal girl died a gory death in a landmine explosion detonated by Naxals in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar district of Sukma, a 55-year-old adivasi woman was on Friday killed in a pressure improvised explosive device (IED) blast, laid by Maoists in a forested village in the region.

The gruesome incident took place near the forested village of Kottacheru under the Bhejji police station in the district in the morning when Muchaki Hidme (55), mother of four grown-up children, inadvertently stepped on a pressure bomb planted beneath the road by the Maoists.

Muchaki, a resident of nearby Gorkha village, died on the spot, the police said.

“Muchaki unknowingly stepped on a landmine hidden by Maoists under the road while going to the nearby tribal market to sell off the forest produce she had collected from the jungle. She died on the spot,” Sukma district additional superintendent of police Santosh Singh told this newspaper.

Earlier on Thursday evening, Class 3 student Muchaki Anita, a resident of Kanhaiguda village under the Bhejji police station, was blown to bits after being hit by a landmine explosion detonated by Maoists at Murliguda in the district.

The two gruesome incidents sparked furore in the region, with local adivasis undertaking a candle march at Dornapal in the district to protest mining of Bastar jungles with IEDS by Maoists.

In another development, two CRPF jawans were on Friday injured in Naxal attacks in two separate incidents.

While one of them was injured when he stepped on a landmine planted by Maoists beneath a road at Etapal in south Bastar district of Dantewada, another was injured when he was pierced with an arrow shot by a Maoist at Chipkal in the same district.
