Curfew was imposed in coastal Andhra’s Vizianagaram town and shoot-at-sight orders issu-ed by the district authorities Sunday after violent attacks on the property of state transport minister Botsa Satyanarayana and Saturday’s large-scale violence by anti-bifurcation agitators. The police arres-ted 32 people for arson and rioting. The town remain-ed tense Sunday as the united Andhra activists hit the streets in the morning despite the curfew and pelted stones at policemen. They targeted the Satya Institute of Technology and Management College in Gajularega, run by a relative of Mr Satyanarayana. IGP D. Tirumala Rao said: “The situation is almost under control. Locals, unaware of the curfew’s implications, are coming on to the roads. Efforts are on to impose the curfew totally.” DGP B. Prasada Rao said more for-ces were sent to Viziana-garam town, including an extra 35 paramilitary companies. Several Andhra districts are, meanwhile, without power and emergency services have been badly hit as 30,000 electricity employees are on an indefinite strike in the Seemandhra region. This has hit power generation in coastal Andhra.
