VHP steps back on Ayodhya controversy

The VHP has stepped back on the fresh controversy over the arrival of stone slabs in Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya.

The VHP has stepped back on the fresh controversy over the arrival of stone slabs in Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya.

The VHP has categorically said that some statements attributed to Mahant Nritya Gopal Das that there were “signals” from the Modi government for temple construction were “false, baseless and misreported”. VHP general secretary Champat Rai said in a statement that a section of the media had misquoted Mahant Nritya Gopal Das and the latter had never made any such statement. “Mahant Nritya Gopal Das is a responsible and respected saint of Ayodhya and the statement attributed to him is false,” he said. “We believe that Parliament will pave the way for temple construction by passing a law. Saints, the VHP and the Hindu community have always respected the judiciary and have full faith in it,” he added.

The VHP clarification comes after a controversy erupted over the arrival of fresh truckloads of stones for carving in Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya. Sources said the VHP had been “tersely” asked by the BJP leadership not to unnecessarily rake up the temple issue and give more ammunition to the Opposition at this time. Local Muslim leaders, including Hashim Ansari, the oldest living plaintiff in the Babri title suit, had already dismissed the issue by saying this was a political stunt “designed to benefit the BJP on the eve of Assembly elections in UP”.
