Uttarakhand HC defers plea on rebel Congress MLAs April 11

The Uttarakhand high court on Friday put off till April 11 a hearing of a plea challenging disqualification of rebel Congress MLAs from the membership of the state Assembly.

The Uttarakhand high court on Friday put off till April 11 a hearing of a plea challenging disqualification of rebel Congress MLAs from the membership of the state Assembly.

The rebel MLAs had challenged Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal’s decision to disqualify them after they sided with the BJP to oppose the Appropriation Bill in the state Assembly. While the Congress maintained that the bill was passed, the Opposition BJP claimed the bill failed to pass as the then Harish Rawat government was in minority. The Centre had imposed President’s Rule in the state citing a “constitutional crisis”.

The Congress, meanw-hile, dismissed as “unc-onstitutional” the ordinance issued by the Cen-tre to authorise expenditure from April 1 in the hill state under Presid-ent’s Rule. The party has said it will move court against the ordinance as it contends that the state Assembly had duly passed the Appropriati-on Bill on March 18 and the Speaker had declared it so.

The Congress has also decided to take out a “Save Democracy” padyatra in the constit-uencies of its rebel MLAs from Saturday to expose them.
