The Union government is in a fix on how to deal with a private member’s bill which is supported by the Telugu Desam Party, a BJP ally. Congress MP Ramchandra Rao is bent on tabling a private member’s bill demanding special status for the state of Andhra. The MP wants the Central government to concede the demand. Already there is a lot of debate within the BJP regarding special status for Jammu and Kashmir. If they agree now to give Andhra special status, a new Pandora’s box will open — Bihar already demands special status. The Central government finds it can neither reject the demand nor accept it and the top brass are trying to stop the MP from tabling the bill. But he remains adamant.
