TN expects little

Foreign minister Salman Khurshid carries a heavy burden on his head when he takes the flight to Colombo on Monday. Apart from the issue of rehabilitation of war-displaced Tamils in the north, the reports that Pakistan-sponsored LeT training camps are active in the island could be at the top of his agenda when he meets the Lankan leadership. An intelligence agency source said Pak-ISI has identified Tamil Nadu as a “moist fertile region to plant its seeds” and there are alerts of possible infiltration of LeT men from north Lanka into southern Tamil Nadu to carry out attacks on temples and crowded market places. “We are watching with concern the rise in activities of robust radical elements in Tamil Nadu and its neighbourhood. Preventive measures are being taken”, a source said. The leaders in TN, particularly chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, have been repeatedly complaining to Delhi about the Lankan naval attacks on fishermen from the southern districts. Even on Thursday, four Rameswaram fishermen were taken away while fishing near Delft Island off Jaffna and remanded in Vavuniya jail. There are now 48 TN fishermen and 34 boats in Lankan custody.
