The seizure of nearly 150 kg of cow meat in Baghpat district had led to tension with Hindu groups staging protests and demanding action against those from whom it was recovered.
A 60-year-old woman from Gauspura village in the district has been arrested in this connection.
The police, acting on a tip off, raided the house of Nazim in Gauspura on Tuesday and recovered 150kg meat, suspected to be of a cow.
ASP Aziz-ul Haq told reporters on Thursday that the veterinary doctors suspected it to be meat of “cow or its progeny” and a sample has been sent for laboratory test. He said the equipment used in cow slaughter were also recovered from the spot.
Two persons Wakeela, 60, and her neighbour Talib, 22, were arrested from the house while three others managed to flee. “The arrested accused have disclosed the names of their three accomplices. Efforts are on to nab them,” the official said. The ASP also said that a case under Uttar Pradesh Cow Slaughter Prevention Act has been lodged against them. Meanwhile, members of Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations led a protest in the district and raised slogans against a particular community which led to tension in the area.
A heavy deployment of police force has been made in the area and a close vigil is being maintained.
