Tarun Gogoi: BJP full of bluffmasters

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Saturday said that the BJP is a gang of bluffmasters resorting to all kind of false propaganda against his government.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Saturday said that the BJP is a gang of bluffmasters resorting to all kind of false propaganda against his government.

Mr Gogoi came down heavily on BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sharma and accused him of promising to make 1951 as base year for updating of National Register of Citizenship (NRC).

Visibly upset over the all round attack, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “Himanta Biswa Sharma during an election rally in Jorhat on Friday had stated that if the BJP comes to power, it will consider 1951 as the base year for updating the NRC and those Bangladeshi nationals who had settled in the state after 1951 have to go back.”

Giving a spin to foreigners issue that dominated the elections of the state, Mr Gogoi said, “Himanta is trying to do politics of conflict. With his announcement he is trying to snatch away the voting rights of a large number of people. We had also signed the Assam Accord and the issue had been solved when we had made 1971 the base year. But now, Himanta is trying to raise an already settled issue to gain mileage. This is politics of divide and rule and the Congress will not let it happen.”

Mr Gogoi also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that Mr Modi has not taken action against those accused in the Panama scam as most of them were his close associates. He also expressed his unhappiness over the Prime Minister, who in an election rally on Friday, defined Guwahati as one of the dirty capitals of the country. He said, “Guwahati falls under one of the 10 best state capitals in the country. Gandhi Nagar in Gujarat and Varansi in UP is far behind in ranking. So Mr Modi should get his facts correct. I will also write a letter to him asking why has he spread such rumour.”

Mr Gogoi in his last press conference, just before the election campaigns come to end on Saturday, also exuded confidence of getting majority and forming the next government in the state.

All the candidates from various political parties are seen giving their last efforts to impress the voters with a flood of promises.

Mr Gogoi was also scheduled to address as many as six election rallies on Saturday the last day of campaign.
