Mumbai
: The Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared Mumbai’s Chowpatty beach as venue for 'Maharashtra Night' on February 14, which is a part of the 'Make In India' event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the six-day affair commencing from February 13.
The order in this regard was pronounced by a three-judge bench headed by Justice T. S. Thakur.
Earlier, the Bombay High Court rejected the Maharashtra government’s plea seeking permission to organise the event there.
The Maharashtra Government had filed an application before the High Court after a committee, appointed by the court in 2001 to monitor activities on the beach, asked the government to seek the court's permission.
The application stated that it proposed to host a 'Maharashtra Night' on February 14 at Girgaum Chowpatty to showcase its art and culture and industrial development, adding that the event would end with a laser show and fireworks display.
The High Court, while refusing to grant permission, had observed that permitting the state government to hold such functions on the beach will be faulty to the guidelines of the committee.
The 'Make In India' week will be packed with business events like the Hackathon, sessions on global design and innovation, CNN Asia business forum, seminars, exhibitions, TIME India awards etc. Mumbai will be in special focus with exhibitions across all museums and art galleries, music, street art, sound and light shows and a street food festival that will showcase the local cuisine of the city.
“The Centre is highlighting 11 focus sectors — aerospace and defence, automobiles and automobile components, chemicals and petrochemicals, construction equipment, materials and technology, food processing, infrastructure development, IT and electronics, industrial equipment and machinery, micro, small and medium enterprises, pharmaceuticals and textiles to attract investments,” an official from the industries department said.
