After his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to strip Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi of his Indian citizenship, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday asked Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to refer the matter of Mr Gandhi’s alleged violation of the Constitution and ethical code on citizenship to the Ethics Committee and disqualify him as MP if he is guilty. Dr Swamy’s party, the BJP, also demanded that Mr Gandhi should come clean as the explanation given by the Congress over the issue was not convincing.
In his letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, the BJP leader said the Congress vice-president, who represents Amethi parliamentary constituency, has violated the ethics code to be observed by MPs and urged her to seek an explanation from him.
He said that if Ms Mahajan felt that prima facie a case existed, she may refer the matter to the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha to decide whether Mr Gandhi can continue as MP. Dr Swamy, however, said the Congress leader should be disqualified because he was “guilty of gross violation” of ethics.
