The Chhattisgarh government on Tuesday offered Y-category security to tribal activist and AAP leader Soni Sori following an alleged attack on her by three motorcycle-borne assailants on February 20 night in south Bastar district of Dantewada in the state. Ms Sori, who is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital in New Delhi, however spurned the offer, saying the Chhattisgarh government should rather think of providing security to the tribal inhabitants of Bastar.

“Soni Sori rejected the offer of special security to her by Chhattisgarh government. She said the state government cannot shirk its responsibility of providing security to 40 lakh tribals in Bastar by offering special security to only one Soni Sori,” Chhattisgarh convenor of AAP Sanket Thakur said on Tuesday.

Sori, whose face was blackened with grease by three unidentified assailants while she was travelling in a motorcycle along with one of her associates from Jagdalpur, headquarters of Bastar, to Geedam in Dantewada in the middle of the night of February 20, was recouping in a Delhi hospital, Mr Thakur said. Dantewada district SP Kamal Lochan Kashyap wondered why Ms Sori was undertaking a 78-km journey on a motorcycle in the middle of night without seeking security when she faced a threat to her life.
