The Maulana, who lives in Meerut district, has now written to district magistrate Pankaj Yadav, saying that he is a “pesh imam” and leads the prayers at a local mosque.
“As a true follower of Islam, I cannot and will not shave off my beard, but I am also apprehensive that if my wife commits suicide, I will be blamed for her death,” he wrote in his letter to the district magistrate.
The cleric has also asked the DM to arrange for counselling for his wife.
According to reports, Maulana Arshad Badruddin had married Suhana of Pilkhuwa town in Hapur district in 2001. He stated that his wife is a fan of stars Slman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan and wants her husband to be clean shaven like them.
The district magistrate had forwarded the complaint to the SSP for action.
