The entire Samajwadi Party leadership in Uttar Pradesh decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on Friday.
UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, whose participation had been confirmed, cancelled his programme at the last minute. Official sources said that the chief minister was busy overseeing the arrangements of the 76th birthday celebrations of his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. The birthday celebrations will kick off on Saturday in Sefai in Etawah.
Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav also decided not to attend the function — possibly the Congress presence which kept him away.
UP minister Shivpal Singh Yadav also cancelled his programme after the SP chief and the chief minister. His office said that the minister had some “urgent personal work”.
