Row over BSP poster targeting Akhilesh Yadav

This is called political tit-for-tat.

This is called political tit-for-tat. In the campaign for the 2012 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party had come up with a short film in which a man is shown riding a cycle and quietly speeding past an elephant that is strolling along. Without saying a word, the Samajwadi Party had conveyed the message that the elephant, which is the BSP symbol, was being overtaken by the cycle, the SP symbol.

Five years later, the BSP is ready for revenge. Former BSP MLC Vineet Singh has now come up with a poster that shows Mr Akhilesh Yadav in a jungle, being chased by an elephant. The poster is titled “Aa raha gajraj (the elephant is coming)” and has a photograph of Ms Mayawati in one corner and that of Vineet Singh in another corner.

This poster was released on Monday and posted on a social networking site which created a furore in political circles. “What is wrong with the poster Didn’t the Samajwadi Party show a cycle overtaking an elephant in 2012 Did we protest So why are they shouting now ” asked a senior BSP functionary.

Mr Singh, incidentally, is a well-known mafia don who is also the BSP candidate for Syed Raza Vidhan Sabha seat in Chandauli district. Police officials in Varanasi were not willing to say anything on record about the poster but IG zone S.K. Bhagat said that the matter was being investigated.

Mr Singh on Tuesday distanced himself from the controversy and said that he was not aware of who had posted the posters.

One of his supporters, however, said that there was nothing wrong with the poster.
