Even as a debate on nationalism rages on in the country, the Akhilesh government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to observe the 15th of each month as “Rashtra Prem Diwas” in all primary schools from April.
Circulars in this regard have been sent to district education officers and district magistrates to ensure compliance of the same.
According to an official in the basic education department, all government schools will fly the national flag on the Rashtra Prem Diwas and after the morning prayers, there will be a special session where the students will be told inspirational stories about the great leaders of the country. The students will also be taught national songs and slogans related to patriotism.
The principals and teachers of government schools have been asked to prepare themselves for these sessions and may buy books related to these topics.
“The idea is to instil a sense of national pride among children and make them aware of the contributions of great men who helped India achieve its freedom and then in national building. We are not going to promote any particular ideology but will familiarise themselves with the lives of all great men so that they learn to respect their country and its leaders”, the official said.
The Rashtra Prem Diwas will also be linked to the Swachcha Bharat campaign and on the 15th of every month, children will be taught the importance of washing their hands.
“We have asked the school heads to paint catchy slogans and pictures on the walls of their schools so that children can learn the importance of cleanliness through pictures and slogans. The slogans should be catchy and easy to remember so that the children can carry it home”, he added.
The state government wants the children to teach the importance of cleanliness to their parents and grandparents.
As the official puts it, “It is difficult to convince adults to adopt a new lifestyle regarding hygiene and cleanliness but if their children and grandchildren ask them to do so, it becomes easier for them to accept the change”.
Besides this, teachers in primary schools will hold interactions with parents on every Monday. “This will enable the teachers to learn about the problems that a child faces in his or her home and also help the parents in keeping track of their child’s progress. Normally, there is minimal interaction between teachers and parents in government schools, hence this decision. A suggestion book will also be maintained in which suggestions given by parents will be recorded”, the official added.
