Eleven years after a minor girl was gangraped in a moving car in the infamous Ashiana rape case, the fast-track court on Wednesday pronounced the main accused, Gaurav Shukla, guilty and sent him to jail.

The quantum of punishment will be announced on April 16. The court convicted Gaurav Shukla after his petition was turned down by the Supreme Court.

Gaurav Shukla, a relative of an influential Samajwadi Party leader, had been evading arrest on the grounds that he was a juvenile when the crime was committed.

It was on May 2, 2005, that the victim, who worked as a domestic help, was returning home with her brother when a Santro car pulled up from behind and three boys dragged the girl into the car and sped away.

The girl was gangraped in the car and burnt with cigarette stubs when she resisted. The girl was later thrown out of the car by the boys.
