With election fever slowly gripping political parties, the Congress has asked the Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh to campaign across the count-ry to communicate the UPA government’s ambitious legislations on food security and land acquisition. Mr Ramesh, who is said to enjoy the support of the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, is apparently adding more political weight to his profile, after having worked for the entitlement-based legislations of the UPA government. After becoming the most vocal voice within the Congress against the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Mr Ramesh would be embarking to win the support of the poor and the rural voters by projecting the government’s recently enacted laws on national food security and land acquisition. So far Mr Ramesh had been key Congress campaigner in Jharkhand and Bihar. Sources said that the Mr Ramesh would first visit Karnataka to explain UPA’s achievements on food security and land acquisition laws. Mr Ramesh, sources said, is reaching out to the state Congress units and their chiefs to make the party office-bearers aware about the two laws. The party is faced with the challenge to make the food security law popular among the people, as the respective schemes of the state governments are considered to enjoy more public support.
