The rumour mill is running hot in the ruling BJP circle in Chhattisgarh about chief minister Raman Singh’s political future following his “sudden” decision to visit Delhi on Thursday.
Mr Singh’s two-day-visit to Delhi, reportedly scheduled in the last minute, comes close on the heels of closure of 4-day-meet of the party where representatives of leaderships of both RSS and Central BJP attended to review the party’s prospects in the 2018 Assembly elections in the state.
Sources said the Sangh leadership was reportedly not happy with the performance of the Raman Singh government, which currently is in its third consecutive term in the state, and felt that the party would find it hard to battle the growing anti-incumbency sentiments among the electorates in the coming Assembly polls if it failed to deliver in coming days.
“It will totally be a different situation in the coming Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh in the wake of split in Congress in the state. We were hoping the newly formed party, Chhattisgarh Janata Congress, led by former chief minister Ajit Jogi, would make some political impact in the state. But, it appears the nascent regional party has belied all calculations by pollsters that it would emerge at least as a third force in the state.
