Newly-appointed UP BJP chief Keshav Maurya said here on Tuesday that next year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls will be fought on the development issue, making it clear that the Ram temple issue was a matter of faith, not an election issue.

Mr Maurya said at a press conference: “Our first target is rid the state of the SP and BSP and win 265-plus seats for our party”.

He said that while SP was a one-family party, the BSP was a casteist party. Mr Maurya claimed the SP government had failed on all fronts, and that law and order was very poor.

“This government is ignoring farmers and the Bundelkhand situation is serious. We are concerned whether the relief measures announced by the Centre will be passed on to farmers by this government, steeped in corruption,” Mr Maurya said.

Asked about the Ram temple issue, he said it was a matter faith — whether constructed through a law, court order or mutual consent. Mr Maurya said the BJP would concentrate on the development issue in the elections.
