With electioneering picking up for the Assembly polls, actors Nana Patekar and Rakhi Sawant is all set to join the campaign for the candidates of the Republic Party of India-Athawale faction in the state. RPI general secretary Nathuni Das said, “Rakhi Sawant heads the women’s wing of the party. Her presence in the campaign will definitely have an impact on the younger generation. Our motive behind contesting the Assam election is to promote the constitutional rights of the people here.” Ms Sawant joined RPI in June 2014 and was appointed chief of RPI(A)’s Maharashtra women’s wing.
The RPI, which has been fighting for the rights of Dalits in Maharashtra, has its roots in Scheduled Castes’ Federation led by Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Bollywood star Nana Patekar and singer and actress Salma Agha is also expected to join the campaign for the RPI candidates in Assam.
Though, RPI is a new entrant in the politics of Assam, the party claimed that they are hopeful of winning at least five seats in Assam.
