The deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, particularly the gangrape of a mother and daughter in Bulandshahr, was the reason for heated exchanges between the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) members in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Condemning the incident, the Modi government maintained that law and order was a state matter.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, BSP supremo Mayawati raised the issue, alleging that the Samajwadi Party government had been unable to control the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh. She pointed out that the recent rape was one among several such instances in Bulandshahr that had become the norm in the state.
“The government has been unable to stop such instances and has proved to be ineffective in maintaining law and order,” Mayawati stated. “What is the government doing It should take such crimes seriously. We should rise above party politics and think about maintaining the dignity and security of women,” she added.
However, SP MPs Naresh Agarwal and Jaya Bachchan interrupted her. Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the ghastly incident, in UP or any other part, needed to be condemned.
