Slain journalist Rajdeo Ranjan’s wife Asha Ranjan moved the Supreme Court, seeking the registration of an FIR against RJD leader Mohammad Shahabuddin and Bihar health minister Tej Pratap for her husband’s death. She also asked the court to entrust the probe to the CBI.

In the petition, Ms Ranjan alleged that media reports had shown two people accused in the killing of her husband in the company of RJD leader Shahabuddin, and Bihar health minister Tej Pratap. Rajdeo Ranjan, who was working with a Hindi daily, was shot dead on May 13. The petition also said even though the family had mentioned Shahabuddin’s connection, the police did not name him as a key conspirator.

On September 10, Kaif was photographed with Shahabuddin, who was being released from Siwan jail after 11 years.

She said the court should issue a direction against the respondents including State of Bihar, CBI and Shahabuddin to stop the infringement of the fundamental rights of the petitioner to live a lawful life; to Direct the Central Bureau Of Investigation to immediately take over the investigation of the F.I.R. for the death of her husband under Police Station-Nagar Thana, Siwan Distt. Siwan and to shift the case from Siwan to Delhi for conducting the trial in a free and fair manner. She wanted a direction to be issued to the CBI to submit a status report and to monitor the investigation. Expressed serious concern over the plight of her family, she sought a direction to the State of Bihar to pay the appropriate compensation to the petitioner and her family members as per Law and to direct the state to provide and ensure respectable and appropriate free of cost and safe residential accommodation and education to her children; adequate security and a job to her.
