A woman was tortured by her in-laws and tattooed with abuses on her legs, hands and forehead over a dowry amount of merely Rs 51,000. The tattoo on her forehead read, “My father is a thief.”
According to a police case filed yesterday by her parents in Rajasthan, the culprits are allegedly the woman’s in-laws, who were upset that she did not bring with her the Rs 51,000 that they had demanded as dowry at the wedding in 2015.
The victim lives in Amer near Jaipur while her husband is a native of Alwar. In her complaint, the victim alleged that harassment for dowry began within six months of the marriage. “They used to beat me up badly. But, one day, three of my husband’s elder brothers tied my hands and inserted cloth in my mouth. They forcibly made me inhale something after which I fell unconscious. They then wrote abuses on various parts of my body, including one on my forehead, saying that my father was a thief,” she alleged.
The woman also alleged gang rape. However, the police refused to register the case. “They told me that the accused were locals; so even if they arrested them, they would manage to come out. You should file the case in your area,” the woman’s father said. He finally filed a police case on Sunday at Amer.
According to the victim’s father, he discovered the torture his daughter was undergoing when he went to see her. “I brought her with me and removed the tattoos,” he said.
