‘Rahul Gandhi practises double-standards’

Accusing Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi of practising double-standards, the BJP on Monday questioned his presence with hate speech accused Imran Masood during his padyatra in Saharanpur.

During the last Lok Sabha elections, Mr Masood, who was a Congress candidate, had threatened to “chop” Narendra Modi, who was then the NDA’s prime ministerial candidate. Mr Masood was subsequently arrested for his controversial remarks.

“Today, he (Mr Masood) is welcoming Rahul Gandhi and Rahul is happy to be welcomed. Rahul Gandhi please tell the nation what is your stand on Imran Masood and all that he had uttered,” BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said.

BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma accused Mr Gandhi of having double-standards.

Making light of the Congress V-P’s pro-farmers padyatra, Mr Sharma said Mr Gandhi has no right to talk about their interest as they had suffered the most during the 10-year UPA rule that saw a large number of suicides by farmers.

“When the Congress was in power, it did little to help farmers. They were always under stress due to a host of issues, including shortage of urea. So many farmers committed suicide and now he is talking about their welfare. He has no moral right to do so,” Mr Sharma said.

The ruling party’s national secretary said instead of attacking the Modi government, Mr Gandhi should introspect over the shrinking base of the Congress and why it was losing everywhere and now forced to ride piggyback on a “corrupt” politician like RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Meanwhile, a day after Mr Robert Vadra claimed that he was being subjected to a “political witch-hunt”, Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the government is not vindictive but the law must be allowed to take its course.
