Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi held a janata darbar in his constituency Amethi on Thursday, while political strategist Prashant Kishor held a marathon meeting with the office bearers of the frontal organisations and cells of the UPCC.

While Mr Gandhi interacted with the people in his constituency, heard their problems and promised to help them, Mr Kishor tried to impress upon the Congressmen that they needed to rise above petty differences and make a concerted effort to revive the party. Mr Gandhi arrived in his constituency on Wednesday evening and attended the marriage reception of the son of senior district Congress leader Yogendra Misra.

On Thursday, he held a one-on-one meeting with the workers at the party office in Ghorha village which lasted for more than an hour. He also met family members of three party leaders, who were killed in a road mishap here in the last week of February.

According to sources, Mr Rahul Gandhi will now be visiting Amethi on a monthly basis.

The move is designed to thwart the attempts being made by Union HRD minister Smriti Irani to make inroads into the Gandhi bastion.

Mr Gandhi is also expected to hold a workers’ training camp in Amethi soon to mobilise party cadres.

Meanwhile in Lucknow, Mr Kishor told party workers taht they must aim at winning 100 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections in order to make the party relevant in state politics. He said that efforts must be made to wean away upper castes, along with Muslims and dalits, because these caste groups are no longer comfortable in the SP, BSP and BJP in the prevailing political scenario. Mr Kishor also told party leaders and workers that unless a combined and concerted effort was made to revive the party, the future of all — leaders and worker — would continue to be bleak.
