Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to jail him. The combative Congress scion hit out at the BJP after senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy claimed Mr Gandhi held British citizenship.
Mr Gandhi, while addressing a national convention of the Youth Congress on the 98th birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, charged that the Prime Minister was using “cronies” to “throw mud” at him, like the RSS and BJP had done against his parents and grandmother Indira Gandhi in the past. “You talk of a 56-inch chest. Probe me, then put me behind bars. I want to tell Modiji and the RSS that I do not have the slightest fear,” he told the convention.
Dr Swamy had charged that the Congress scion had himself claimed to be a British national in documents before the company law authorities of the UK. “Modiji, it is your government. You have the agencies. Get a probe done against me within six months and send me behind bars if you find something. Stop all this — the mud that you throw at me and my family through your cronies. You are not in Opposition, you are in government now,” the Congress vice-president said.
“There is not an iota of truth,” he said, refuting Dr Swamy’s claims. “I am not going to be scared by such things. I will continue to fight against the BJP,” he added.
“Ever since I was a child, I have been watching people from the RSS and BJP throwing mud at my grandmother, my father, and even my mother. I want to say one thing. Modiji is now the Prime Minister of India. Different kinds of allegations are levelled against me. There is not even an iota of truth in them,” he said. Taking a potshot at the PM, Mr Gandhi said Mr Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah toured a lot in Bihar for a clean sweep for the party but instead saw a “clean sweep by us”.
