The resignations of Punjab Congress chief Pratap Singh Bajwa and state Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar from their posts on Thursday were accepted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, a significant development ahead of the crucial Assembly polls expected in Punjab in early 2017.
AICC general secretary in charge of party affairs in Punjab Shakeel Ahmed said Mr Bajwa and Mr Jakhar tendered their resignations to party chief Sonia Gandhi and that she had accepted the resignations. Mr Ahmed did not specify when the reconstitution of the PCC will take place, but talk in party circles has it that it could happen in a couple of days.
The resignations of the two top Punjab Congress leaders is seen as an exercise to give former chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh a free hand in the state. He may become the new state unit chief.
Capt. Amarinder Singh, currently deputy leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, could be the party’s face in the Assembly election expected in Punjab in early 2017.
The resignations are to be seen against the backdrop of a series of consultations Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had held with Congress leaders over the past few months on how best to tone up the organisation in Punjab where its prospects appeared bright.
