The Punjab Congress on Tuesday rejected Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s demand for rotating the post of Chandigarh administrator between the governors of Haryana and Punjab.

The Punjab Congress on Tuesday rejected Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s demand for rotating the post of Chandigarh administrator between the governors of Haryana and Punjab.

The party said Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab, and Haryana agreed to make its separate capital in the Rajiv-Longowal Accord.

Addressing a press conference, Congress leaders, including Punjab Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh and campaign committee chairperson Ambika Soni, said Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal should clarify their stand on the issue. The PCC president said the issue needed to be settled once for all. He warned that going back on the issue can have alarming repercussions. “We need jobs for 90 lakh youths and that is not possible without investments, which can only come when Punjab is peaceful,” he said.

The party also condemned ignoring CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi for the swearing-in ceremony of new Punjab governor V. P. Singh Badnore. “It is a serious lapse as the CLP leader is not just an MLA, he holds a constitutional post. Replying to a question, the PCC chief said, “Any number of applicants can apply from a family, but ticket will be given to only one member.” He added if there is an MP from a family, it will not affect the chances of a deserving family member for the Vidhan Sabha seat. Capt Amarinder also clarified that no Congress candidate will contest from over one Assembly segments. “One candidate will contest from one constituency only,” he said.

Giving breakup of the applicants he said, of 1661, 1025 have appliedfrom general category while 636 have applied from reserve category.
