A 70-year-old priest has been arrested for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl in Bahraich district in UP. The incident took place Thursday evening when the accused lured the child to his home and allegedly raped her.
The girl, who had arrived from Gorakhpur district with her mother earlier this week to visit her maternal grandparents, was playing outside their house when the 70-year-old lured her away with a toffee, police said.
The child, bleeding profusely, returned home a few hours later and narrated the incident to her mother. Family members and some locals rushed to the priest’s home and beat him up before handing him over to the police.
The victim has been admitted to a local hospital where her condition is said to be critical on account of excessive bleeding, an official there said.
ASP Dinesh Tripathi said a case on charges of “attempt to rape” has been registered against the priest while further investigations are on.
