Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar’s gaffe — in which he purportedly recounted how Indian freedom fighters like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel were hanged by the Britishers — while addressing the Tiranga rally at Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh on Monday, has created a flutter in political circles.

Paying tribute to Indian freedom fighters on the launch of the “Tiranga Yatra” here, he said, “The struggle for Independence that began in 1857 ended 90 years later when we threw the Britishers out. We salute our freedom fighters . Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, Pandit (Jawaharlal) Nehru, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru all those who were hanged...” Mr Javadekar, later, issued a clarification through tweets, saying, “I am amused with the news. I paid my respect to all freedom fighters since 1857”.

“I mentioned leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose. It was a full stop. In the next sentence, I recounted those who were hanged, jailed and suffered at the hands of the Britishers. There was no confusion in the minds of those who listened. I hope this removes all confusion”.
