New Delhi: Campaigning in Amethi ends Saturday evening, and the Congress is leaving no stone unturned to win all the five Assembly seats in the parliamentary constituency of its vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

There is also a friendly fight between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party on two Assembly seats of Gauriganj and Amethi (City). Officially, the Congress and the SP are in an alliance in UP.

Mr Gandhi has campaigned in his family bastion for Congress candidates, accompanied by sister Priyanka Gandhi.

The Congress had also pressed into service RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in these Assembly segments to augment its chances. In the last Assembly elections in 2012, the Congress won Tiloi and Jagdishpur segments in Amethi.

Amethi (City) seat is seeing a “battle royale” between Ameeta Sinh of the Congress and Rani Garima Singh of the BJP.

Ameeta Sinh is the wife of Congress MP Sanjay Sinh, who is also chairman of party’s campaign committee. Rani Garima Singh is Sanjay Sinh’s first wife. The SP has fielded its MLA Gayatri Prajapati.

In the last days of the campaign, the Congress is on a overdrive in the district. General secretary in-charge of UP Ghulam Nabi Azad actively campaigned in the district, so has the UP Congress chief Raj Babbar.

Responsibility has also been given to the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India to campaign in all five Assembly segments. A control room has been established at Munshiganj guesthouse in Amethi.
