New Delhi: The minimum income guarantee scheme, which is considered as the brainchild of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and is going to be the fulcrum of the party’s campaign for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, has been given a new name by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra — Nyunatam Aamdani Yojana or NYAY.

According to party sources, Ms Gandhi gave the name during the day-long meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which was held in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Rahul Gandhi had first mentioned about NYAY during his visit to Chhattisgarh soon after the Congress had stormed to power in the state after the assembly elections in December 2018.

NYAY, or the minimum income guarantee scheme is going to be the main highlight of the Congress’ Lok Sabha elections campaign, as it aims to focus on rising unemployment during the NDA regime.

Mr Gandhi specifically mentioned in Ahmedabad that lack of employment will be a major issue for Congress during polls as unemployment has been at its highest in the last 45 years, thus clearly indicating that the Narendra Modi-led government has failed in job creation.

Listing demonetisation and faulty implementation of GST as main reasons behind loss of jobs, Congress leadership feels that creating job opportunities is the need of the hour, and party sources pointed out that Mr Gandhi is going to strongly project the NYAY scheme as the antidote for solving the perennial problem of unemployment.

He said in the CWC meeting that a minimum limit would be fixed for income under the scheme, which will ensure that all beneficiaries get at least a regular basic amount in terms of income on monthly basis.
