One person was allegedly killed and several more injured on Sunday when the police opened fire in the air and resorted to a lathicharge to disperse thousands who had collected in a school field at Khera village in Sardhana in Meerut district to attend the banned all-caste panchayat in protest over the National Security Act being invoked against local BJP MLA Sangeet Som. ADG (law and order) Mukul Goel, however, downplayed the incident, and also denied any death. But reports from Meerut confirmed that one person had got a bullet injury and had later succumbed to it.
