Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Niti Aayog to develop an index to measure water conservation and management. After holding a review meeting with chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karanataka, the Prime Minister laid emphasis on long-term drought-proofing solutions with the help of the state governments.
“Usage of latest technology, including the remote sensing, and community participation, particularly of nari shakti (women power), an play a key role in effective drought management,” the PM noted.
Mr Modi in his interactions with the CMs on Saturday also stressed on the vitality of increasing water use efficiency through sprinkler and drip irrigation, including in sugarcane cultivation.
“Usage of modern solid and liquid waste management practices in urban areas will also benefit the adjoining rural areas. Time has come when states should speak of water conservation efforts and management, the way efforts to increase GSDP and investments are spoken of,” added Mr Modi.
