Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the meeting of the Council of Minister’s on Friday that a Task Force will be set up to prepare a comprehensive action plan for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

The 2020 Olympics is scheduled to be held in Tokyo. The Task Force will prepare overall strategy for sports facility, training, selection procedure and other related matters.

It will comprise of members who are in-house experts as well as those from outside.

The Prime Minister said that the Force will be set up over the next few days.

India had sent its biggest contingent, comprising 118 athletes, in the recently concluded Rio Olympics.

A string of below-par performances saw India win just two medals at the recent Games, fewer than the six clinched during their best-ever performance in London four years earlier.

Badminton champion P.V. Sindhu clinched silver at the Rio Games and wrestler Sakshi Malik won bronze. But it was far below the sports ministry’s target of 10 medals in Rio, and the country finished 67th in the medal standings.
